VBS News: Teenage Riot

On 24 November 2010, while students across England staged walkouts in protest to cuts in education funding, a few thousand in London attempted to march on Parliament. Unfortunately, since they destroyed the Tory headquarters two weeks ago, the police weren’t about to let them reach Parliament, so instead they kettled thousands of stoned, angry hippies and excited sixth formers into a small space and let them destroy that instead. The crowd were kept there for over nine hours.

VBS.tv were there to film it, check out the video here.

After Hours Athletes - Manchester 30th November

PUMA and VICE bring you The After Hours Athletics: a night of games, late night revelry and DJs, with hosts, our dear friends, The House of Hot Breath.
The Deaf Institute30 November8pm - 12pm

Clique DJs,Gold Teeth DJs, On the 30th November After Hours Athletes come to Manchester for another night of games, music and booze, hosted by the very hilarious House of Hot Breath. See below for a taster of what is in store...
SIAMESE TWIN POOL - Two athletes don their specially contructed boiler suits, with two usable arms and three legs, and work as a team to shoot pool.

TABLE MULTIBALL FOOTBALL - This is table football but with a furious addition. Instead of one ball, a whole bucket of balls is dumped in and the game lasts until all the balls have been scored.

CARDIOKE - The concept is simple: sing karaoke on the crosstrainer. There’s a calorie counter attached and whoever burns the most calories is the winner. Can you beat the record: 54.7 calories to Iron Maiden's Run To The Hills. If you can your prize will involve 5,000 calories.

THE HANDBAG HEAVYWEIGHTS - Two ladies stand together back to back, each holding out a handbag filled with something heavy, at arms length. This is a test of strength and stamina: whoever drops their arm first is the loser.

THE PIZZAFACE CHALLENGE - This is a re-work of the classic cereal box game, using a stack of six pizzas. Each athlete has to bend down and pick up a piece of pizza without using their hands. After each round a pizza box is taken off the stack and it gets lower. People have been known to take their clothes off during this event.

Calling All Artists Update

So, I've been getting a lot of emails and whatnot regarding the last post. I have looked at all your art and I like a lot of it. I haven't replied to each of you individually yet because quite frankly i did not expect such a large number of replies, but i promise i will when Ive selected a few to fill the next few months. In the time being, the first artist who will be featured is a young lady by the name of Hayley Goodsell. I'll be doing the profile/post at some point very soon, so if you cant wait till then, have a little search for her on google.

Also, in the time leading up to the first artist profile. I shall be profiling my own work in a couple of posts, so keep your eyes peeled ladies and gentlewomen for some photography coming your way.

Calling all artists

Calling all artists. I decided to do some good and what with my interest in art being that i am one and knowing how difficult it is to get just a tiny bit of press and whatnot, i have decided to help out my fellow man somewhat. Every month i would like to do an artist profile on an up and coming artist currently working, anywhere in the world. Whether you are a Classical painter, photographer, sculptor, audio visual artist, graphic art, interactive artist, animation, mixed media, whatever your forte is i would like to do a profile on you and your art. I think it will start as a once a month sort of thing.

So please can you apply to asakusa119@gmail.com , with examples of work, brief history, university's/art school attended, exhibitions held. You know the usual. I'll have a flick through everything, and if i like anything you could be featured on here, - The K Drip. Read in over 35 countries and has many thousands of visitors every month it could be a good opportunity.

Don't worry, if you are a sea lion like my buddy at the top, that's cool.

Please email me at - asakusa119@gmail.com with subject heading 'Calling all artists'. First artist will be featured towards the end of November.

The X Factor

Why people watch this show i don't think i will ever understand. Ive never been a fan of shit reality TV such as the x factor, the apprentice, big brother etc etc.

The only reality TV Ive ever enjoyed was a show called 'Something About Miriam' first broardcast on Sky One in 2004. It was a reality dating show where six male contestants battled it out to date 21yr old Mexican model Miriam. Only to find out at the very end she was actually born a man and currently still had a penis. I believe it ruined many lives, especially the winner who was serving in the marines. But it sure made me laugh.

Anyway, last years X Factor Christmas single took a beating when an anti establishment and anti X Factor single was launched. Notably Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name. I was bombarded with Facebook groups and whatnot begging me to join and buy the single. Something i find somewhat ironic given that the most important part of the song is the lyric 'Fuck you, i wont do what you tell me'. Nether the less it peaked at number 1 and kept the X Factor single off the top spot, whoever he was. I think a similar thing happened the year before with Jeff Buckley and Leonard Cohen although this failed to delight the nation quite like the Che Guevara fans did. I never liked the dirty communist anyway, but thats a different story.

Bearing all this in mind, there is a particular song i think we should strive for Christmas no 1 this year. I think everyone should start to panic buy it when the x factor single is released, its really a cracker.

Slutty Cunt Getting Ploughed By The Dead - by Funeral Rape.

Oh, also, don't even get me started on Cheryl Cole, shes a disgusting human tramp and i'd willingly watch her get pelted with coconuts in the throat repeatedly by the masked magician in a petrol station forecourt on the outskirts of Basingstoke with his nob hanging out.

Old Spice, - Best Advert Ever

If you do not know what this man, or this advert is about then i am afraid you have been missing something for most of your life. Not that i ever really liked Old Spice, or stacked topless black guys, but this makes me want to smell like a man, and not a lady. Best Advert Ever.

Punk Rock Pie Recipe

24102010062

With some left over mince, i decided to try my hand at making a pie. It actually tasted so good i decided to do a recipe.

You'll need

  • 100g of Mince (I prefer Quorn Mince, as im a vegetarian, but meat will also work)

  • 1 Medium Carrot

  • 1 Medium Tomato

  • Quarter of a tin of Plum Tomatos (Finely Chopped)

  • 1 Medium red onion

First of all, start by chopping up the tomato, the tinned tomato and the red onion. I prefer to grate the carrot. Then add this to the mince, mix up and cook. I also like to experiment with herbs and spices so i mixed in with these ingrediants, 2 cloves of finely chopped garlic, a small handful of finely chopped basil, a dash of Tumeric and Safferon and a healthy slog of paprika, with a dash of salt and pepper to boot. Of course you do not need to do this but i feel it helps.

You should know how to make pastry so do this while the mix is cooking. Use a suitable sized over proof dish and line with pastry, wait a few mins after you take the mix out before adding to the pastry, then apply how much pie filling you want before applying the lid. I suggest filling it to the brim so the pastry lid does not sink into the pie.

With any spare pastry, which i had lots of. Decorate the pie. I decided a punk rock theme and suitabally applied The Dead Kennedys logo upon the pie. Lightly brush with milk to allow it to brown in the oven. Then place it a pre-heated over at 200 for around 20 mins until golden brown.

Then eat.

An Afternoon With Chuck-D

Sticking to the theme of the last post which was essentially hip-hop, i thought I'd post some of the interview i did with legend rapper and hip-hop star Chuck D of Public Enemy for the BBC just before Barack Obama was elected the first black president of the US. I spoke to him about politics, the music, and whats the deal with Flava Flav's clock, does he keep it on time?

Its the 20th anniversary of 'It takes a nation of millions to hold us back', its often been called revolutionary. What do you think it was about the album that made it such the success that it is?

I think some of the things that made it were, it was the first album of its time to come out without any single street credibility before. At the time hip hop was a singles market, and we were kinda like the ones that come up with the album concept, the way the album was put together, there was live aspects, the combination of instrumentals that broke up the record and it was very topical and relevant about those things that were happening at that time which made it a little bit more grown up that a lot of the rap at the time.

How do you feel about the current state of hip hop as its changed an awful lot since public enemy started out?

Well wouldn't it be fair to say that rap changes every year just like most music changes every year, nothing remains the same. Public Enemy came along and made this statement like Bob Marley did in reggae, or Bob Dylan did in rock and roll making innovative experimental statements both musically and verbally so that's what signifies us. It doesn't mean that everyone else should try to do what we do. But if an artist comes out and raps about cars, money, women, drugs, drink, good times, parties, those have been the topics of stories from the first time we had recordings so we have to understand the history.

Most artists can usually attribute their music to being inspired by a group, band, rapper, artists of some kind, are there any in particular that inspired you to create music of your own?

Of course, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in hip hop, Run DMC, Houdini, i mean we were record collectors so i grew up in a household of James Brown, Curtis Mayfeild, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Ike and Tina Turner, The Beach boys, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, music from the 60's, 70's, 80's, from Elton John to Aerosmith, we were thorough with the records that influenced us.

What does Flava Flav do with his clock when traveling through time zone's?

(Laughs) He keeps it on the same time and usually in that time zone its wrong. I think he keeps it on New York time.

Public Enemy has always been outspoken with Politics, how do you feel about Barack Obama and what kind of impact it would have on the US getting a black president should he be elected?
I'm voting for Barack Obama for all the right reasons and all the wrong reasons. Meaning all the right reasons are i think are he's prepared, he's honest, he's equipped although he's going to have to deal with three times as much press as any other president. And the wrong reasons I'm voting for him is just cause he's black. But the wrong reasons for America having just a white male for 200 years as the president, but not only that but the person who has lost to him has been a white male. It's very non reflective of the melting pot.

What's it like these days, going on tour and leaving your whole family behind now that your a tad older?

Easier than before. We had to take a dip in the 90's as everyone had kids who were in single digits. It starts this way, a band starts as teenagers and they have nothing but time, then when they're in the late 20's and 30's then they have kids and a family. Then there's the 40's and 50's and there kids are grown so they have available time again. That's why you see a regrouping of the Eagles, they have so much available time. But speaking for myself you have to find a balance between your life and the group, so we concentrate on less is more, quality over quantity.

Do you think the reason Public Enemy has stayed consistently popular and sold so many records is that the audience can personally relate to the lyrics which deal with politics, oppression and a social and cultural consciousness?

I think every group has to try the best it can in Public Relations. You always have to be able to relate, and be humble.

You were in the UK a couple of months ago giving a speech at Westminster College, they're used to politicians, ex-leaders giving speeches. How did it come to par you giving a speech and what issues did you deal with?

I normally talk about, rap, race, reality and technology. I've been on the lecture circuit for 18 years, long time.

Are you a fan of UK Hip Hop like Dizzee Rascal for example?

Yeah Dizzee Rascal's in the US right now doing his thing. We've got the same working people at the moment which is a great thing.

Twenty years, 10 albums, 61 tours, millions of records sold, one word to sum it up?

Bring The Noize!

Kanye West - New Album, New Teeth...?

I like Kanye west, well, that's not exactly true. I don't dislike him, neither do i really like him, but i feel there's some sort a mutual respect we have for one another.

I think the shit he pulled with Justice/Simian and Taylor Swift were both pretty dumb things to do and i dunno what he was thinking.

But, lets give him some credit. He did make 'The Blueprint'. We all like Jay-Z after all. I liked him a lot more when he didn't get women i don't really like singing choruses for him but if he can have Beyonce and Rhianna hanging around him all day looking admiringly up at him, then why shouldn't he? After all, they hardly ever look up to me these days after that fateful and misinformed incident with the mustard and papaya's i pulled last Valentines day. What a mess.

Kanye also made 'Through The Wire'. Which if you haven't heard, its a fucking awesome song. I never really got Kanye at first; it took me some time but i always liked the fact he came from a different background to the usual hip-hop artist these days and he wasn't rapping about bitches, guns, bling and 'smoking weed every day', as much as i do love the D.R.E. He was a fresh artist in somewhat stale and stagnant hip-hop world, or at least the mainstream hip-hop world.

Well, there's my brief but fair history of the man Bo Selecta referred to as Ken West. Now the real topic is that album cover. Apparently banned in the US. My beautiful dark twisted fantasy gets released November. I'm almost lost for words. According to his twitter, tweeting 'They don't want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix', well, yes maybe. Not sure, but it could possibly be the worst album cover of all time, saying that, it could quite possibly be the best album cover of all time. I haven't decided.

I was actually going to post this yesterday, but after hearing the news about Kanye i couldn't resist to wait just one more day. I always thought Kanye had a pretty good sense of fashion, he always looked good, he's marketing his own fashion line now actually i believe. It was all good, except them stupid glasses you cant actually see out of. But now, the lad has pushed things too far, he's obviously gone crazy with power and fear or he has more money than sense. To actually have the bottom row of your teeth removed, REMOVED, and replaced with diamonds. Apparently citing 'that's what rock stars do'. Now, I'm not sure, but how many rock stars replaced their entire bottom row of teeth with diamonds. John Bonham did not do that, but he did put a fish up a girl once and let his Rottweiler's eat dog food out another girl. That my friend is what a rockstar does.

Marc Jacobs - My Introduction To Fashion

I suppose it was inevitable really, getting into fashion. After all i look up to photographers such as David Lachapelle, Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino amongst others. If i want to be a fashion photographer an interest in fashion is somewhat important you would think.

I first discovered Marc Jacobs when an ex girlfriend expressed her wish to always smell of 'Basil' by Marc Jacobs. This was the first time i heard his name, it meant almost nothing to me, but the name stuck in my head. He is also the creative director of Louis Vuitton, apparently one of the most powerful gay men in the United States and one of the first top end designers to feature a plus size range.

In the coming months i started to get more and more interested in fashion, if not from Lachapelle's work, a much more recent ex girlfriend with a divided sense of fashion and my viewing of 'The September Issue'. I tried to show an interest in the ex's interests and i soon found myself flicking through her copies of Vogue at all the pretty adverts (which there many) and trying to dig up old Tom Ford and Givenchy items in charity shops to little or no avail.

But Marc Jacobs, as a designer i find very interesting. My personal favourite, not sure if its the way he spells his name, the really good smelling ex girlfriend or perhaps that he's actually very good at what he does. Considering my lack of pounds I've found myself being more and more drawn into the fashion world and find myself investing more and more in dapper threads.

And lastly, if there's any guys reading. 'Bang', the new-ish aftershave from Marc Jacob's when mixed with the smell of cigarettes and whiskey is a killer. Girls dig it, or so Ive been told. Remember that.

Detroit Lives

I bet you guys have all heard about the doom and gloom news reports about crumbling, derelict Detroit. Well, VICE got together with Palladium boots and Johnny Knoxville to meet the creative young people who are working to rebuild their city. It's not all bad as the broadsheets may lead you to believe; there's a lot of hope here. The cities' like a blank canvas, a fresh approach and a fresh start.

Heritage boot brand Palladium are continuing their quest to explore hidden, forgotten and abandoned places in urban environments. Their latest exploration entitled "Detroit Lives" features Johnny Knoxville, who takes viewers on an "off-the-beaten path" exploration through the city to discover if there's more to Detroit than the scenes of destruction and abandonment that it has become known for.

Once the fourth-largest metropolis in America—some have called it the Death of the American Dream. Today, the young people of the Motor City are making it their own DIY paradise where rules are second to passion and creativity. They are creating the new Detroit on their own terms, against real adversity.Once the fourth-largest metropolis in America—some have called it the Death of the American Dream. Today, the young people of the Motor City are making it their own DIY paradise where rules are second to passion and creativity. They are creating the new Detroit on their own terms, against real adversity.

In this 30 minute 3-episode documentary, Knoxville discovers a DIY paradise full of artists and entrepreneurs who view the abandoned "D" as a raw space where young people can create community and start rebuilding their city from the inside out. A burgeoning class of young people are inspiring each other by using the cities 'disadvantages' as opportunities. His hosts include notable Detroit punk band The Dirtbombs and hip-hop artist Black Milk.

The Silkworm - Sudbury, Suffolk

Don't ever go this pub, its full of fucking idiots. It also has the biggest fucking mug working the door on a Friday night. A man who looks like he has only just stepped up in the world, to a doorman, at the tender age of 35. It also looked like he was taking steroids, reminded me of a rapist cunt. It's like a Wethersoons but there's an extra pound on top of every item.

Michael Bay Wank's At Boats

I dont know about the rest of the world but I'm more than sure they agree that this man 'Michael Bay', is stealing time. Stealing time from our lives making bad movies, time i can't get back. This is the Cock Snapper ruining the Transformers legacy, this is the Crystal Meth addict that made Bab Boys 2. It's true about the crystal meth too. My friend Rudy told me he smokes it through his anus. Rudy isint usually wrong, except for that time he thought 'Frankie' from Frankie Goes To Hollywood was in the loft wanking over pictures of old boats. Turned out that was also Michael Bay.
